If your law firm is actively practising search engine optimization (SEO) and other aspects of marketing, you are doing so with the aim of getting more visitors to your website. Once you get them there, you can then convert them into new business. One of the ways you drive more traffic to your site is by using the Google Search Console.

What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console is a free tool that those who create and maintain the content on a website can use to manage its search functionality. Google Search Console also provides detailed reports on the number of people who visit your site and their demographic information such as age, sex and location. In Google Search Console, you will also find information regarding the browser types and devices that are used to access your website.

After you have set up and verified your account, you will notice the following menus in Google Search Console that can be used to improve SEO:

1. Search Appearance

The first menu you will notice in Google Search Console is Search Appearance. In the Search Appearance tab, you will see how your website is set up and how it will appear in search results. Elements like structured data, rich cards, HTML and accelerated mobile pages (AMP) will all influence the appearance of your site in the search engine. These elements can be viewed and adjusted in the subsections found in the Search Appearance menu.

2. Search Traffic

Another menu you will find in Google Search Console is Search Traffic. In this section, you will find details about your site’s ranking among other websites as well as the keywords that are causing your site to appear for searches. You will also find information regarding backlinks and internal links, Google penalties and mobile usability.

3. Google Index

Indexing is the process by which web pages are added to the search engine. If you want to know how many of the pages on your website are indexed, you will find that information in the Google Index menu. In this menu, a report is generated to show which ones of your web pages are indexed, which ones are blocked and which ones have been removed. With this information, you can resolve issues, prevent pages from being blocked from the search engine and remove pages you would like to keep private temporarily.

4. Crawl

When you add new pages or update existing ones, they are discovered and added to the Google Index by the Googlebot (search bot software) using a method known as crawling. In Google Search Console, you will find the Crawl menu which reports on your website’s crawl stats. You will be able to see the last time your site was crawled, whether there are crawl errors, broken pages and files, and more.
